This past winter, during snow storms, neighbors asked for and offered their help shoveling via the Nextdoor Help Map. Now that we are in a hurricane, wildfire, tornado, and flood season, neighbors are using the Help Map to get the help they need and lend a hand to prepare for, respond to, and recover from severe weather events and everyday daunting tasks. Getting and offering help matters because it helps keep people stable and prevents disruptions, financial stress, and ruin. In extreme cases, as we've seen during storm surges and flooding events, getting help saves lives.
Neighbors can use the Nextdoor Help Map to ask for or offer help for things such:
Reduce the risk from Wildfires:
- Clear away dead trees, brush, and vegetation within 100 feet of your home
- Place a wire screen over attic vents and soffits to prevent embers from entering your home
- Remove leaves and debris from roofs and gutters
Prepare for Hurricanes:
- Put up storm shutters before a hurricane arrives
- Run errands to get supplies
- Give or get a ride during an evacuation
Respond to flooding:
- Borrowing pumps to pump out floodwater
- Taking pictures of damage for those out of town or who evacuated
Daunting tasks:
- Changing oil for the first time
- Securing a ride to and from a medical procedure
With NOAA predicting an average Hurricane Season with 17 to 25 named storms and 3 to 7 major (Cat 3+) hurricanes, neighbors will likely need to rely on each other. As we have seen during past disasters like Hurricane Harvey, neighbors turn to each other and sometimes serve as each other's first responders.
