Post and graphic posing ice safety questions to help community members make an informed decision about going out on the ice
As the air and water temperatures rise, so does the danger of falling through the ice.
Please review and share the questions below to make an informed decision before going out on the ice.
  • How deep is the ice? If it’s less than four inches, it’s not safe for skating/walking.
  • What does the ice look like? Clear ice is potentially stronger than cloudy ice, which can be dangerous.
  • Do I have the tools (ice picks & throw rope), proper technique, and physical strength to self-rescue or to help others?
  • Have I shared my route/plans and established check-in times with others?
  • Do I have my fully-charged phone in a waterproof case?
  • Do I know how ice thickness is affected by water movement at the bottom of a body of water?
  • Am I familiar with identifying and navigating around pressure ridges that pose a danger?
