In the poll below, we asked, How deep does fast-moving water need to be to carry away a small car?
[Insert your results here, for example: “X percent of you said 18 to 24 inches.”]
The answer is 12 inches. The National Weather Service says 12 inches of fast-moving water can carry away a small car. 6 inches can knock over an adult. 18 to 24 inches can carry away most large SUVs, vans, and trucks.
You can’t judge depth by looking, and you can’t see whether the road under the water is still there. Getting through once doesn’t make it safe. More than half of flood-related deaths come from driving or walking into floodwater.
If the road is covered, turn around, [City/Town].
Who in your household drives? Who did you share this with?
