Because we're all connected to our neighbors here on Nextdoor, you can ask for help to get to your safe space in several ways. Reach out to people you know, such as a neighbor, nearby friend, or family member, and ask for help. If you don’t know your neighbors or don’t have family or friends nearby, it’s ok to knock on your neighbors' doors, introduce yourselves, and ask them for help, too. This may feel uncomfortable, but put yourself in their shoes; if someone asked you for help, you’d like to say yes. As neighbors, we take care of each other.
You can also ask your neighbors for help on Nextdoor by clicking on the following link → https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?open_composer=true&hashtag=ridetoshelter and in the message type something like: “As you know, tornadoes often touch down where we live, and I don't have a way to get to a safe place. Would you be willing to bring me with you to your safe place or go to one together?" Hopefully, one of your neighbors will offer to help. Suppose you are not comfortable approaching people you do not know for help. In this case, you can ask community faith-based leaders if they know anyone who can help, and you can always call your local emergency management agency and ask them to connect you to resources.
To help others learn from your experience, we invite you to share your steps to secure help and get to your safe space.
