When wildfires hit Spokane in August, Cameron Birge from Microsoft's AI for Good team sent an email to partners with a shapefile: homes their team had identified as burned.

I wondered if we could isolate those homes and import them into the city's Nextdoor page as a custom area, so agencies could geo-target Nextdoor neighbors whose homes burned in addition to the typical council districts, flood and evacuation zones.

It turned out the majority of the damaged homes belonged to Nextdoor members.

We've never been able to give a public agency this kind of precise geo-targeting before. It's a new unlock for how agencies can reach residents during disasters, and one we're now working to apply going forward.
