#CookingSafety Starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention(™).
While this week is #FirePreventionWeek, cooking safety starts with you each and every day of the year. Below are the top four things you can do to prevent cooking fires and related burns:
🫕 Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Turning your handle inward prevents kids and pets from knocking the pan off the stove, which can lead to serious burns and fires. Also, keep cooking areas clear of pot holders and other things that can catch fire.
🧑🏽🍳 Please always keep a lid nearby when you cook. It’s essential to have a lid nearby so that if you have a small fire on the stovetop, you can quickly slide the lid onto the pan and turn off the burner to extinguish the fire.
🔥 Watch what you heat and set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
⏲️ In a multi-tasking world, set a timer to remind yourself to focus on your cooking. When cooking on the stovetop, turn off the burner if you need to step away from the kitchen.
🧒 Keep kids and pets three feet away (1 meter) from the stove/oven and where hot foods/liquids are served.
Are you curious about why 3 feet (1 m) matters?
Kids under 5 make up over half of the 12,000 average annual ER visits for tableware/cup-related scald burns from hot foods/liquid being served or spilled. These kids also make up a large proportion of the over 20,000 average annual burn injuries from direct contact with a hot grill or stove/oven requiring medical attention.
