Poll: How many different ways would you hear about severe weather?
Poll question: How many different ways would you hear about severe weather?
Answer options: → Just one → Two → Three or more → Not sure
Poll description: We want to know where our community stands before the next storm. Count every way you’d hear: an app or your phone, the Nextdoor Alert Map (Nextdoor.com/alerts), a NOAA Weather Radio, TV or radio, or sirens. Keep at least one that runs on batteries, like a NOAA Weather Radio, because power and cell service can go out. When this poll closes, we’ll repost it with the results.
Seed comments: post each as a separate comment immediately after publishing:
  • Comment 1: Has your household ever talked about what you’d do if your phone died during a storm
  • Comment 2: [Link to NOAA Weather Radio info or your local NWS office page] Here’s where to find a weather radio and how to program it for [County].
  • Comment 3: What’s your backup when the power is out? Radio, a neighbor who calls you, something else? Share it here for the rest of us.
Poll repost:
In the poll below, we asked, How many different ways would you hear about severe weather?
[Insert your results here, for example: “X percent of you said just one.”]
Sirens are built to warn people who are outside. Many homes won’t hear them, so they aren’t a plan for indoors. An app and the Nextdoor Alert Map both need a charged phone and a signal. If the phone dies or loses signal, both stop. A battery-powered weather radio keeps working when the power and cell service are out.
If your phone is your only way, add one that doesn’t depend on it: a NOAA Weather Radio with fresh batteries, local radio, or a neighbor who agrees to call you, [City/Town].
