Did you know that Thanksgiving is the peak day for home fires—more than three times the daily average—averaging around 1,400 incidents? While we can't assist with challenging relatives, the following tips can help keep you and your family safe.
🦃 Kitchen Safety Tips 🦃
➡️ Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop to keep an eye on the food.
➡️ Ensure that children and pets stay at least 3 feet away from the stove, oven, and hot food or liquids. Steam or splashes from vegetables, gravy, or coffee can cause severe burns.
➡️ Make sure that electric cords from appliances like electric knives, coffee makers, plate warmers, crock pots, or mixers are not dangling from the counter within easy reach of children or pets.
➡️ Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
➡️ Test your smoke alarms to ensure they are functioning properly by pushing the test button.
Oil-powered turkey fryers pose many dangers, and the NFPA strongly discourages their use. Instead, consider using an infrared, electric, or air fryer that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory (check the label).
