𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐅𝐅, I hope you are OK. If you live in an affected area, please check on your neighbors to ensure they are OK.
𝐓𝐈𝐏𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄:
📱 If you need medical attention, call 911.
✅ If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, leave immediately
⚡️ Do not touch or cut power lines, as they may be live
📷 Take photos before you begin to clean up, and contact your insurance company
🌧 Don’t drive in flooded areas — cars or other vehicles won’t protect you from floodwaters. They can be swept away or may stall in moving water.
🙋 Need help or have/need local information? Post to YOUR neighborhood's Nextdoor news feed using this link — https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?open_composer=true&hashtag=tornadohelp — and be sure to select "Your neighborhood" or "Nearby neighborhoods" to reach the neighbors closest to you.
𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐋𝐘 consider sharing your experience with NOAA using the "Tornado Tales citizen science tool." The information will help the agency improve communications and messaging to help you stay safe. The tool is an online survey that allows people to report their tornado experiences anonymously and should take no more than 5 minutes to complete.
Developed by researchers at the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory (https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/), the tool will be used to understand better how people receive, interpret, and respond to tornado information from NOAA.
👉 If you wish to share your experience today, please visit https://apps.nssl.noaa.gov/tornado-tales/survey?utm_source=Nextdoor
The survey asks basic questions to collect information about an individual's responses to warnings and watches, including how they prepared for and monitored the weather and what safe space they used to shelter when NOAA's National Weather Service issued a warning. This information can help NOAA identify areas where warning messages may not result in the safest and most effective actions.
𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐋𝐘, remember:
😔 It's common to feel overwhelmed, anxious, isolated, or distressed when severe weather is forecast or occurs.
🫶 You're not alone: The National Disaster Distress Line 1-800-985-5990 offers 24/7 confidential, multilingual emotional support https://bit.ly/2XYr0HO
