You may not take cash from an ATM as often anymore, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware of what’s happening around you. Below is a refresher on staying safe while depositing or withdrawing at an ATM.
1. Check your surroundings. Always ensure you’re in a clear, well-lit area where you can see and be seen.
2. Don’t be distracted. Never use your cell phone at an ATM, listen to music, or take calls. Look around for anyone watching you from a car or on foot. If you think you’re being followed in your car, drive straight to a police or fire station or somewhere crowded and well-lit. Never be afraid to call 911 if you feel you are in danger.
3. If something doesn’t look right, don’t use it. That means looking for strange devices, wires, or objects you don’t recognize.
4. Most ATMs have a small mirror. Check it to ensure no one is looking over your shoulder at your PIN; never write it down anywhere.
5. Do not wear expensive jewelry or bring other valuables to the ATM.
6. Never count cash at the machine or in public. Wait until you are in your car or another secure place.
7. Be prepared before you leave for an ATM. Don’t wait until the last minute to get your paperwork in order.
8. Report it immediately if you see anything suspicious on your bank statements.
9. Don’t be a hero. Money can be replaced; you can’t. If someone demands your money, give it up, get to safety, and call 911.
