In the poll below, we asked, Have you cleared dry grass and brush from around your home?
[Insert your results here, for example: “X percent of you said you’re not sure how far to clear.”]
Dry grass and brush next to a house give wind-blown embers something to ignite. Start at the house and work out:
→ 0 to 5 feet: remove dead grass, weeds, and leaves, and anything else that burns, including mulch and stacked wood
→ 5 to 30 feet: mow grass short, and remove dead plants and leaf piles
→ Keep roofs and gutters clear of leaves and needles
Required distances differ by local code, so check with your local fire department for the rule in [City/Town].
Mowing can start fires too. Mow before 10 a.m., and never on a hot or windy day.
Which part of your yard did you clear first?
