Prepare now - Severe wind gusts, severe thunderstorms, and tornadoes are possible today, [Date]
FYI - EDIT THE FIRST PARAGRAPH BELOW WITH THE CURRENT SITUATION. BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE DATE IN THE POST TO CLARIFY THE TIMELINE. The Storm Prediction Center has placed [City/Town Name] under a moderate risk (level 4 out of 5) for strong tornadoes and damaging winds [day of week], [date], [time window]. Some of these storms may arrive after dark, when most people are asleep and tornado warnings are easiest to miss.
Do this first: decide where your household will shelter. Do it now, before the storms arrive.
→ The safest place in a home is the basement. → No basement? An inside room without windows on the lowest floor: a closet, bathroom, or interior hallway. → If you live in a mobile home, plan to leave before a warning is issued. Find a public shelter near you on the national tornado shelter map, the only map of its kind, at https://findyourtornadoshelter.com, and know exactly how you'll get there. [Agency: if you maintain a local shelter list, link it here too.]
𝘽𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚:
📱 Make sure warnings can wake you. Charge your phone, confirm Wireless Emergency Alerts are turned on, keep the volume up overnight, and put fresh batteries in your NOAA weather radio. Have more than one way to receive warnings: phone, TV, radio, FEMA app.
🗺️ Check the Nextdoor alert map at https://nextdoor.com/alerts/ for live watches and warnings in [City/Town Name], and keep checking it as the storms approach. It shows exactly what's active where you live.
🌬️ Secure or bring in anything that could become a projectile in 75 mph winds: patio furniture, umbrellas, trampolines, trash bins.
🚗 Park vehicles in a garage or away from trees. Large hail and falling limbs cause most of the damage in storms like this.
📷 Take photos of your home now. They make insurance claims easier if there's damage.
🙋 Check on neighbors who live alone or in mobile homes. Make sure they have a plan and a ride if they need one.
Know the difference:
→ Tornado WATCH = conditions are favorable. Stay alert and be ready to shelter. → Tornado WARNING = a tornado is happening or imminent. Shelter now.
We'll post updates here and on the Nextdoor alert map at https://nextdoor.com/alerts/. For the latest forecast, see https://www.spc.noaa.gov/
What's your household's shelter spot? Tell us in the comments. Your answer might help a neighbor pick theirs.
